IOD EMEA 2010 - Day 1 Opening General Session

The opening general session for the IOD EMEA 2010 conference in Rome took place this morning.  As I mentioned yesterday, I was closely involved in this session, and it was great to get to see the whole production come together and hear our executives and customer deliver their stories on the main stage.  (And, of course, if you were in the audience or watched it live via the stream, I'd love to hear what you thought of it.)

I wasn't fully live blogging the session, but below are some of the highlights I captured over the course of the session:

Welcome from the local executives Santina Franchi, Ivo Koerner, and Zoran Hrustic,  Over 2,700 attendees, 560 sessions.

Rob Ashe - GM, Business Analytics

Welcome to Decade of Smart.  Using insights to drive better decisions, better resources.  The Decade of Smart was heralded by Sam Palmisano a short while ago.

Possibilities - 20 yrs ago - how to make computers faster, 10 years ago how to automate,  Today it's about how to do things smarter.  Get insights out of the things we've got in order to drive better outcomes.... How to make cities smarter, traffic better, and inside companies, how to pinpoint activities of customers, especially when they need to move faster and when customers have more choices than ever before.

Our world is changing - 6x increase in global water usage since the 1900s; $40B lost in supply chains due to inefficiencies; congested roadways cost 8.7B litres of gas a year....

Why are we able to harness this information?  The world is now instrumented, interconnected, intelligent.  Information is now available in real time.  The challenge is to take advantage of it.

These possibilities [creating smarter traffic systems, smarter food systems, smarter healthcare, smarter supply chains, etc.] today are real.  Some examples of organizations doing this today include Avis Europe (applying predictive models to improve customer retention), Bharti Airtel (accommodating 3M new subscribers a month), and  ENRESA  (managing and retaining information for 100 years and more).

What's driving these possibilities?  Information and Analytics.

There was a study IBM recently conducted around business insight [CFO Study - link]. What kind of outcomes are companies investing in business insight seeing?  33% more revenue growth, 12x more profit, 32% more Return on Invested Capital.

How are they doing it?

Start with information agenda - think about it strategically.  Need flexible information platform to make sure information is available, reliable.  Need Business Analytics to drive better outcomes.  Around future behaviors, past behaviors, real-time behaviors.

Our focus is on outcomes... Areas like fraud detection, customer insight - how past behaviors might drive future behavior.  Managing risk.  Taking these three capabilities and targeting outcomes like these is what's enabling us to drive returns our customers are seeing, returns such as a 50% reduction in storage space, 60% reduction in loan processing, 50M Euro savings through modernization of core business applications.

We're here to talk about how enable those possibilities.

Ron Ercanbrack, VP Enterprise Content Management

We've heard about possibilities - will talk now about reality of what customers - people like all of you in the audience - are doing.  Transforming into real customer value.

SNCF - French national railroad.  Two problems.  First, lot of paper ticketing.  Wanted to get single view - go from paper ticketing to electronic ticketing. Result was ability to offer improved customer service while consolidating data and implementing an archive to manage data and content.    Second area focused on was investments.  Needed way to have single view at what doing, and implemented Cognos to streamline processes; 60% faster investment decisions now.

Auchan - Large retailer.  Data feeds from multiple sources in company.  Bring together into single source, make more streamline decision making.  Use IBM Smart Analytics, InfoSphere technology.  Now have faster reaction to customer demands, and are optimizing distribution company.

France Telecom-Orange - Long time Oracle customer, frustrated with what seeing, and brought in DB2 team.  They did an exhaustive analysis to improve performance and lower cost.  Went with DB2 projects, over 97% of data transferred right off the bat, lower costs, improve what doing with database

Grandi Navi Veloci - Large ferry company in Italy.  Highly competitive market.  Wanted to grow share while at least maintaining revenue.  How grow share in highly competitive market?  Brought in IBM GBS Business Analytics and Optimization and deployed InfoSphere Information Server and were able to grow # of passengers by 8% in down market while maintaining revenue by applying analytics to optimize pricing.

Philips Consumer Lifestyle - 8,000 products.  Wanted single view of information across 1000 employees and 50 sales teams, and as a result of bringing in Cognos 8 Planning, have much better visibility and greatly streamlined planning process.  As a result, they can be much more responsive to changing market demands, decreasing inventory costs and ensuring the right products are in market.

Video:  Why data matters

Arvind Krishna - GM, Information Management

"How" do we start on this journey... how go about achieving success.  Can't do it piecemeal.  Combination of flexible info platform, of building business analytics on top of it, and bringing it all together with info agenda, aligning IT with business priorities.

Our job is to innovate to make your life easier as you embark down this journey.

Deliver through combination of systems, software and solutions.  Have to start with systems optimized for workload.  On top of that layer in content and data repositories to capture massive stream of info coming at you.  Information integration, Warehousing, MDM work together to ensure have single view of information and can provide it to anyone and anything in enterprise that needs it.  Build business analytics on top of it - from business intelligence, advanced analytics, financial performance and strategy mgmt, analytic applications.  Industry-specific and cross-industry solutions on top of all that.

Innovating... IBM has spent $11B over past 4 years acquiring innovative companies.  Over 10,000 technical professionals.

Advanced Case Management.  There is a huge amount of unstructured content.  The question is how to leverage this to optimize performance across the enterprise.  Latest advancement is around Advanced Case Management.  Not just manage cases, but really bring together people, process, and content management to help enterprise move faster, get more nimble, improve things at point of client interaction.  Bring together monitoring and analytics, content, events, workflow, rules, collaboration, social software.

Integrating and Mastering Information - Delivering a trusted, single view of information.  How integrate information from disparate sources?  Information Server - innovating on a # of dimensions now.  Make it easier to use XML content, tie together diff. sources of info (e.g. SAP), leverage metadata, make it more robust, more scalable, more available.  Looking at Master Data Management - Initiate brings unique capabilities, such as building master patient care data.  Bring all patient-related info together so health care provider looking at patient knows everything about them.  How accelerate deliver of shared models... industry-focused accelerators, templates, reports, BI.  How bring together to go from months to days... InfoSphere Warehouse packs for customer insight and for market & campaign insight.

Information Governance - Once have all this info, need to govern it.  Guardium protects info - ensures only correct users have access to information (e.g., customer info).  Also need to make sure are managing growth of information - where Optim comes in.

Managing Data - Significant innovation in how we leverage hardware, lower cost, maintain/reduce storage growth.  Through technologies such as Informix, embedded technologies, mainframe... IMS (some clients have had no unplanned downtime in a decade).  DB2 for both query and OLTP systems.

All of these need to work in conjunction with hardware.

Video - workload optimized systems

pureScale Application System - When rolling out applications, need app servers, databases, servers, storage.  Putting it together in a system that is fully available (clustered, no single point of failure), and scalable - can scale from 1 to 1000.  Can start small, cluster to get bigger, and scale with no changes to application.  All brought together and optimized... app server more than 70% more efficient than other combinations of SW and HW, and database up to 30% faster.

Smart Analytics System - InfoSphere WH and Cognos technologies on IBM HW and Storage.  Takes cycle of building things from months down to a week, ready for operation immediately.  We do the work in our labs and put the systems together, and you get suprior performance - up to 3x faster than what could get on your own.

SPSS - From data collection to statistics to decision modelling.  Decision Management 6.0 brings power of predictive analytics to all users in enterprise.  Quickly construct what if models, analyze underlying data that's collected (whether about fraud claims, or upsell/cross-sell).  Financial Svcs firm in Netherlands greatly improved call center responsiveness.

Enhanced Support for System z (also known as mainframe).  New: Cognos Now! for Linux on System z; IMS 11; Smart Analytics System for 9600.  Call for beta:  Cognos 8  BI for z/OS, SPSS for Linux on System z; InfoSphere MDM Server for z/OS, DB2 10 for z/OS.

Extreme data - Institute of Space Physics... modeling how universe is evolving.  They will be collecting 20 terabytes of new data an hour.  Will be using InfoSphere Streams to analyze data as collected.

Hadoop - tech invented in open source world to deal with petabytes of ino and be able to extract insights.  We're bringing Hadoop together with WH technologies to analyze vast amounts of information

Content Analytics - bridging worlds of enterprise content management and Cognos to analyze freeform text and other content.

Information Agenda - announced at this conference 2 years ago, and tremendous progress since then.  Hundreds of professionals.  Over 300 customer workshops, 465 industry accelerators, 40 industry-specific solutions.  For example, retail industry - have over 750 years collective experience.

IBM Global Business Services - Business Analytics and Optimization.  Over 5,000 dedicated consultants, leveraging largest math department in private industry.  Have built 7 analytics solution centers around globe.
